Beef Quality Assurance Traveling Road Show

Name

Lee Van Vlake

Situation

Beef cattle producers in the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina are looking for ways to increase the price for their cattle and increase their bottom line profit. Producers in the Pee Dee Region are looking for cutting edge programs to increase their knowledge base on management practices to improve the quality and reputation of their cattle, thus increasing buyer demand for their cattle throughout the country. It is equally important that cattlemen understand that they need to be producing a high quality product for the consumer.

Response

The Extension agent coordinated a Beef Quality Assurance program to be held in Marion SC. The program was coordinated and conducted by Clemson University Extension Service. The BQA program in Marion SC was sponsored by the Pee Dee Cattlemen's Association. The Beef Quality Assurance program was broken up into 3 displays and presentations. The Green Display (Responsible Culling Improves Herd Productivity and Efficiency) was discussed by Dr. John Irwin. Dr. Irwin is an Animal Scientist in Laurens County. The Blue Display (Beef Quality Is Every Cattlemen's Business) was discussed by Dr. Harold Hupp. Dr. Hupp is Clemson University Beef Cattle Specialist. The Red Display (Targeted Breeding Equals Customer Satisfaction) was discussed by Keith Hall. Mr. Hall is a county agent in Chesterfield County. A lot of cattlemen understand that as a beef cattle producer they need to do the right things to ensure a quality product to the consumer. This translates into a good eating experience for the consumer when they sit down to eat beef. Beef Quality Assurance outlines the proper steps to ensure a quality product and a good eating experience. Also on the program, we had Bill Hogan from High Plains Feed Yard in Western Kansas. Mr. Hogan discussed retaining ownership of beef cattle. Mr. Hogan expressed the importance of producing a quality animal on the farm as this would translate into a quality animal through the feeding process and on to harvest time. Kevin Yon from Yon Family Farms in Ridgesprings, SC discussed the importance of selecting quality herd sires. Mr. Yon emphasized the importance producers must place on producing high quality calves and how this translates into quality products for the consumers.

Impact

We had 57 people in attendance for the BQA traveling road show. Also we had a total of 88 people in attendance to listen to Bill Hogan and Kevin Yon. Due to personal consultation, everyone expressed knowledge gained. At least 70 percent of the attendees found the program useful and would implement things learned back on the farm. Everyone in attendance expressed that the program was a success and learned the basic steps toward Beef Quality Assurance. Overall, the BQA traveling road show in Marion SC was received as an asset to the Cattlemen in the Pee Dee Region and they expressed future interest in this program.
