Certified Animal Manure Manager (CAMM) CEU Opportunities in the Pee Dee Region
| Name | Jesse Adams | | Situation | South Carolina passed R61-43 "Standards for the Permitting of Agricultural Animal Facilities". This regulation requires operators of Confined Animal Facilities Operations (CAFOs) to attend an animal waste management training provided by Clemson University. They are required to complete 10 hours of Continuing Credit Hours in 5 years to maintain the CAMM Certificate. CAFO operators have previously voiced and continue to voice concerns about staying abreast of the SCDHEC regulations, EPA
regulations, and license requirements. Without being informed about the changes in chemistry, new regulations and keeping their licenses valid, operators are in jeopardy of losing their ability to maintain CAMM certification. | | Response | Over the last year, the CAMM Team has worked to provide CAFO Operators opportunities close to home. CAMM Team members developed and delivered a program to meet these concerns. Sixteen training sessions were planned across the state. Four sessions were planned in the Pee Dee area. Ninety
seven (97) participants attended a 2-hour training presentation that
provided a comprehensive update about the following topics: Records, High soil test Potassium Impacts, Manure Application Calibration and Manure Sampling. | | Impact | After participating in the program, participants indicated through personal interview that they had increased their knowledge and understanding of manure application calibration and the importance of using proper application techniques. Also, they had received the continuing education hours toward maintaining their CAMM Certificate for the next license period, thus allowing them to make better decisions regarding manure application and reduce fertilization cost of their crops in order to produce a profitable year. The program allowed them to reduce the hazard to the environment by over application of nutrients.
