The Power Of One
| Name | Karissa Ulmer | | Situation | 4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. It uses a learn-by-doing approach, the involvment of caring adults, and the knowledge and resources of the
Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service to empower youth to become healthy, productive, and contributing members of society. The impact of 4-H on a young person's life may not be realized until years
later, however, when you have a 4-H'er who has strong parental support and a youth that has the drive and determination to succeed in life, acts of leadership and citizenship can be magnified through the 4-H program. | | Response | When the county 4-H agent first met this 4-H'er and her mother, she knew that young girl would leave a legacy on the Hampton County 4-H program. Though she is a typical teenager, she has a mother who encourages, challenges and supports her daugher in everything she does. Quickly, the agent got the teenager involved with local programs and then had her attend State 4-H Congress. From there, she expanded her goals to include
running for State 4-H Council, submitting a State Recordbook and doing anything else she could for the 4-H program. She also learned of an opportunity of traveling abroad on an International 4-H trip and she decided she wanted to be a part of that experience also. | | Impact | Through encouragement of the county agent, her family, and her self determination, a 16 year-old Hampton County youth has already participated in a multitude of experiences. She was elected secretary for the State 4-H Council, had a State winning recordbook in the area of citizenship, has traveled to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA and traveled to Costa Rica for an International 4-H service learning project. She raised over $400 to help with her expenses to travel abroad. She has helped plan, implement and evaluate programs not only on the county, but the State level. She initiated her own school supply campaign to donate to hurricane victims. She encourages others to get involved in their communities and in 4-H. Finally, she continues to
challenge herself and others to set goals and work hard and enjoy life. |
