4-H Wild At Webb Camp

Situation

Youth interested in wildlife and shooting sports education have limited affordable opportunities for summer educational programming. The 4-H natural resources and shooting sports program is one option available to youth in Hampton County.

Response

The first 4-H Wild at Webb Camp was held the third week of June at the Webb Center in Garnett, SC. Nineteen youth ages 9 to 14 had a fun-filled week of learning about wildlife, natural resources and shooting sports. Youth, under supervision of certified 4-H instructors, State 4-H Natural Resources Specialist, and hunter education Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officers, had the opportunity to experience shotgun, rifles, and archery at a variety of ranges. All individuals participated in a hunter safety course. Campers learned about biodiversity, habitat composition, communities, cultural perspectives, economic considerations, adaptations, environmental change, populations, issue investigation, management and responsible action from some of the best instructors in the state. In addition to all the wildlife and natural resources activities, participants had an opportunity to explore the many facets of 4-H. Individuals developed a presentation on something they learned during the week and shared their knowledge with their parents and supporters at the end of the week. Other activities included canoeing, fishing, night hikes (spotlight surveys for deer), small mammal trapping, camp fires, tackle crafting, bird calling, and other fun camp activities.

Impact

100 percent of the participants said that they would return the following year. Through this program, we have brought in $14,000 in generated fund, gifts and donations to Hampton County. This includes a 4-H Shooting Sports trailer so we can reach more youth about the importance of gun safety, as well as, introduce them to shooting sports. We also have established a 4-H Shooting Sports field day. Many of the youth that participated in the camp have become more involved in 4-H Natural Resources programs in their counties, as well as, other 4-H opportunities.
