Funding Forestry Focus
| Name | Darren Atkins | | Situation | Newberry County is the second largest timber producing county in the state. There are five large-scale wood product industries currently operating within the county as well. These industries invoke a lot of public interest in forest management activity and have rendered an active county landowner association. The landowners requested a large scale program that would attract landowners and foresters alike to interact in an open forum. The major constraint was funding for the program. | | Response | Collaborating with a committee from the landowner association, we were able to design a program that we anticipate will attract the two groups targeted. With the task of raising the funds to implement the program, I began the process of identifying sources. Through diligent research and industry interaction, I was able to identify a major funding source, the
Bradley-Murphy Forestry and Natural Resource Extension Trust. This group of retired forest consultants offers grants to fund projects that encourage the interaction we were seeking. After submitting a grant to the group, they agreed to provide $1000 to fund the entire cost of the program. Simultaneously, I had begun soliciting from local sources and was successful in securing an additional amount that will be used by the Forestry Association to provide scholarships to local graduates. | | Impact | With the program still in the future, the complete results are yet to be determined. However, I consider it a success that the funding that was needed was secured in a timely manner. It is always encouraging to provide an opportunity to Newberry County that others see a benefit from as well. |
