Addressing Profitability in Forest Management
| Name | Darren Atkins | | Situation | Newberry County is second in the state in cash receipts from timber sales. There are industries such as G-P, International Paper, Norbord, and Mead-WestVaco operating in Newberry. The forestry business is alive. There are also a lot of landowners in Newberry who are actively growing fiber, but aren't necessarily doing it effectively. My intention is to provide them with the tools to do so. | | Response | I brought in a specialist from UGA to talk about Intensive Pine Management. This was a one day workshop that engaged over 90 landowners. The local industries and businesses sponsored all of the meeting. From this meeting, I challenged everyone in attendance to take what they had learned a step further and schedule a time with me so that we could assess
their individual situations. This was successful as I have been able to follow up with over 25 landowners. | | Impact | The impact that this meeting had on the landowner's profitability is predicted to average $25,000 per landowner over the next 10 years. The tools were provided to make these people successful and most importantly, I made sure that they had the continuing support to carry out what they learned. 95% of the attendees at the meeting indicated that they have learned something that will change the way they manage their timber for
production. |
