Blackville Downtown Development
| Name | Terri S. Smith | | Situation | The Town of Blackville needs to develop their downtown to attract tourism for economic development. Large industries, for the most part, are not interested in locating in small rural areas that don't have the infrastructure, workforce, and incentives that larger counties are able to provide.
Because of the lack of jobs and businesses, this town does not have the tax base to support the people that live there and therefore is shrinking in population and quality of life for those that are left. | | Response | Extension was asked to re-establish Blackville's Downtown Development Association that was disbanded twenty years ago and provide education, strategic planning and training for their board. We will also help find funding for their projects.
1. Participants will learn how a non-profit board functions.
2. Participants will go through a strategic planning session with CIECD.
3. Participants will learn how to solicit funding and grants.
4. Participants will learn how to market a rural region. | | Impact | Through our efforts, Blackville has re-established their downtown development association. They are now in the process of receiving training for their board. The next step will be to work on a master plan for the town, solicit funding and grants and market their town to tourists to create the quality of life they have dreamed of and deserve. |
