Craig's Pond
| Name | Terri S. Smith | | Situation | Craig's Pond is a rare wetland area owned by Chem-Nuclear Systems of Barnwell. It was recently dedicated as a state heritage preserve. to "significantly" improve the management of the area for its ecological value. A dedication ceremony recognizing Craig's Pond as a new South Carolina Heritage preserve was held November 12, 2005 at the Chem Nuclear Systems picnic shelter and park on S.C. Highway 64 west in the Snelling community of Barnwell County. To make Craig's Pond more accessible to the public, boardwalks and trails will need to be added to this Carolina Bay. | | Response | I have been instrumental in helping the committee apply for a PRT Trails Grant to add these needed boardwalks and trails. Craig's Pond is moving forward with a $90,000 trails grant applied for this month and plans to open to the public as soon as boardwalks are installed. | | Impact | With access, more people can see and enjoy the Bay and its unique natural environment. Most importantly, Craig's Pond will enhance educational opportunities for the school children and citizens of Barnwell County, as well as promote tourism in the Heritage Corridor. |
