Beekeepers Buzz with Second Graders

Situation

The Edisto and Aiken Beekeepers Association members have been a great asset to the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service. They are concerned that the age of the local beekeeper is increasing and the lack of interest of young people to explore the art of beekeeping is growing. They have provided the expertise needed to educate children in our area about beekeeping.

Response

The Edisto and Aiken Beekeepers Associations presented the Art of Beekeeping to 350 second grade students during Ag Heritage Learning Center's 4-H Animal Science Week March 12-15, 2007 held at Edisto REC in Blackville. Mr. Carl Johnson of the Edisto Beekeepers Association shared his experiences as a beekeeper. Vivian Moseley and son, Allen Moseley, of Aiken Beekeepers Association, shared their "learning" experiences as new beekeepers. Allen is thirteen years old and has his own hives. The beekeepers demonstrated how to work with their hives using a smoker and brush, talked about the life cycle of bees and the different roles of the Queen, Drone and Worker bees. Allen wore the beekeepers suit complete with hood and gloves. Six schools from four counties participated in the week-long program. These schools will be able to participate in the Edisto Beekeepers 4-H Coloring Contest. Prizes for the beekeepers coloring contest are mini coolers filled with Crayola art supplies donated by the Bookworm of Barnwell. The students also played the Buzzy, Buzzy Bee Pollination Game led by the Barnwell County Career Center Agricultural students. In addition to these activities, the students rode a wagon to the Edisto Bull Test to learn about the life cycle of cattle and graph the Black Angus, Red Angus and Gelbvieh Bulls. Some students visited the Heritage Corridor Region Three Discovery Center which focuses on the economic impact the railroad and agriculture have had on our region.

Impact

For the past three years, the Edisto Beekeepers and new to the program this year, the Aiken Beekeepers, have volunteered a total of 84 hours to educate youth about the Art of Beekeeping. Including last year, 33 Barnwell County Career Center Agriculture Students have assisted with teaching by leading a game, reading a bee story or helping students graph.
