Wheat Variety Challenge
| Name | Jay W. Chapin | | Situation | Many new varieties of soft red wheat are released and promoted every year in the Southeast. This presents a dilemma for growers looking to
optimize their returns by staying abreast of the constantly changing choices. Which marketing claims do they believe? | | Response | The Clemson Extension Wheat Variety Challenge annually invites each breeding program (public and private) to submit what they believe to be their most competitive lines for S.C. production conditions. The program
evaluates yield, test weight, disease resistance, insect resistance, and straw strength against current variety standards. There is no charge for these entries. Results are disseminated each August showing multi-year
performance and which varieties are recommended as out-performers under S. C. conditions. | | Impact | Results of the Clemson Extension Wheat Variety Challenge are the major factor in whether new releases are accepted by growers and how soon acceptance occurs. By helping growers stay current on disease resistance and other agronomic traits, the program increases grower yields by a conservative estimate of 2 bu/ac. The annual impact of this
program is $1.6 million ($8/ac x 200,000 acres). |
