Peanut Variety Evaluation
| Name | Jay W. Chapin | | Situation | Peanut variety availability is increasingly dictated by sheller preferences rather than the traits that optimize grower profits. | | Response | The Clemson Extension peanut program evaluates comprehensive agronomic
performance of peanut varieties and unreleased cultivars in 4 tests
at Blackville and 2 at the Pee Dee REC. Results are disseminated at grower meetings.
| | Impact | The Clemson Extension peanut variety evaluation program has a great deal of influence on which varieties growers choose even when less than optimal varieties are available. A very conservative estimate is that this program is increasing yield by 100 lb/ac ($25 /ac) on 40,000
acres annually, for increased grower returns of at least $1 million
per year. |
