Babysitting Workshop for Youth
| Name | Latosia S. Gibson | | Situation | Colleton County has seen an increase in teenagers caring for younger siblings, neighbors and family members. Many of these teenagers have not been properly trained in basic babysitting procedures and emergency techniques. The injury rate of young children with teenager care givers has increased by 10% in the last five years. These care givers were not trained to provide basic, safe babysitting services. | | Response | The County agent, the local library's children's librarian and the local hospital collaborated to provide a babysitting workshop/course for youth targeting ages 12-17. The agent and librarian, along with a nurse for CPR training and another County Extension agent taught a series of six (6) one and half hour monthly workshops for six months reaching 15 participants. Participants represented the county's majority and minority populations, including a number of Hispanics. The participants were provided a workshop workbook and other supplies. The participants were required to complete assigned work, create a babysitting kit and become trained in CPR for infants and children. A special recognition and certificate was given to all participants that completed the course. | | Impact | After participating in the Extension program, 97% of the participants indicated that they had increased their knowledge about babysitting, child development and nutrition. Ninety-four percent indicated that they increased their knowledge about personal money management. Thirteen participants completed the course and were CPR trained. As a result of the course, seven participants received jobs as babysitters.
