Service Learning Project
| Name | Alta Mae Marvin | | Situation | The high school dropout rate in Colleton County is 47%. Studies conducted by the National Adolescent Health Information Center indicate that students who are given the opportunity to engage in their communities through service learning, leadership programs and enrichment activities had a significantly lower dropout rate when tracked through their high school years. In developing the Youth Leadership/Dropout Prevention program we included a strong service learning component. | | Response | The Service Learning Component of the Youth Leadership/Dropout Prevention program was included to provide an opportunity for students to engage in civic activities and tie in middle school curriculum standards. The Service Learning Program the students engaged in was the Veterans History Project sponsored by the Folk Life Center of the Library of Congress. The
students conducted one-on-one interviews with local war veterans,
videotaped the interviews and have submitted the interviews to the
Library of Congress. In addition, copies of the interviews will also be submitted to the Colleton County Memorial Library for their Oral History Collection and to the school libraries. The students conducted 42 interviews with veterans from World War II, Korea, Viet Nam and the Gulf Wars in addition to several interviews with veterans who retired from military careers. | | Impact | The middle school students learned to conduct interviews, learned more about history from veterans who made history come alive in the class room, and learned from the Veterans and their service the significance of civic engagement. There were 106 youth, their impact is below:
Do you feel you benefited from the interviews? 67% indicated yes.
Do you feel you are better prepared to conduct an interview? 87%
indicated yes.
Do you feel you are better able to talk with your teacher? 62%
indicated yes.
Do you think you learned something about history? 87% indicated yes.
Would you like to conduct other interviews? 80% indicated yes
Again, based on the fact that these are at-risk youth, the numbers
are excellent. Forty two veterans participated; 100% of the veterans
indicated a positive experience. There were 6 newspaper articles over 9 months and 2 radio programs. |
