Situation

In Colleton County, there is an increased rate of children and youth caring for themselves and other siblings. This rate is steadily increasing because parents/guardians are working longer hours and are away from home. Many of these children are becoming latch-key children. As the number of latch-key children increase, the number of accidents increase. More and more children are not getting nutrition, safety, child development and CPR training to handle emergencies, prepare nutritious meals or snacks and basic life skills.

Response

The county agent collaborated with the local library and hospital to provide quality babysitting training targeting youth ages 12-17. The agent and local children's librarian co-taught a series of six one and a half hour educational lessons once a month at the local library reaching fifteen participants. Fourteen participants attended the six lesson series that focuses on how to help youth handle emergencies, food and nutrition, hands-on educational activities, business management and life skills. News articles and brochures were created and published to advertise the program.

Impact

After participating in the Extension program, ninety-five percent of the participants indicated that they had increased their knowledge about babysitting: handling emergencies, food and nutrition, business management and life skills. Ninety percent indicated that they increased their knowledge about developing habits of personal and interpersonal effectiveness, how to take responsibility for their choices and set priorities and achieve goals. Sixty percent indicated that they uncovered a potential to become a leader and master the keys of managing their time.
