Pasture & Hay Field Management for Extension Agents and Agricultural Industry Representives

Name

Marion Barnes

Situation

Weeds in pastures and hay are costly to producers and lead to reduced forage quality in pastures and hay fields as well as lower forage yields and animal gains. Producers depend on Extension agents and agricultural industry representives for advice and weed control recomendations. Better educated and more informed agents and consultants are better able to provide correct advice on controling pests such as weeds in forages. New herbicides and weed control methods are entering the market and keeping producers up to date benefits the industry as well as farmers themselves.

Response

Extension forage specialists and agricultural industry reps requested an in-service training to update Extension agents and consultants on forage production and weed control in pastures & hay fields. A weed control training was held at three locations (Edisto REC, Pee Dee REC and Greenville S.C.) in February 2006. Topics covered in these trainings were Establishing & Managing Bahia and Bermuda grass, Poultry Litter Application, Managing Legumes in Pastures, Alfalfa Production and a field tour, and Understanding the Enviromental Effects of the Herbicide Milestone and other Pasture Herbicides. Approximately thirty Extension agents, agricultural industry reps and producers attended the Edisto REC training.

Impact

Evaluation results indicated the training met the needs of the attendees. The program was rated a 4.76 out of a possible 5.0 which indicates a very successful program. As a result of attending this training, attendees were more likely to have a pasture management field day, make better recommendatioins to forage producers, explore alfalfa production in bermuda grass and incorporate information received at this training into livestock producer programs in the future. Participants left the training with more knowledge on weed control in pastures and hay fields and a better understanding of the use and application of the herbicide milestone.
