Master Gardener Training Program
| Name | Shawn Jadrnicek | | Situation | Colleton and Jasper Counties have not had a horticulture agent in three years. After communicating with plantation owners and members of the commercial and consumer horticulture industries, a need for education in environmental, arboriculture, and horticultural science was revealed. Also many new residents unfamiliar with the lowcountry climate have moved into the area and expressed an interest in taking the Master Gardener course. | | Response | The county agent recruited and trained thirty Master Gardener Volunteers in the two counties. Plantation managers, nursery managers, landscapers, and homeowners were represented in the class. | | Impact | All participants indicated knowledge gained from taking the class. In addition, sixty hours of community service have been donated to the counties and more hours are planned. A community garden has been started at the future civic center and a major landscaping project at Hendersonville Elementary school has been completed with the help of the Master Gardener graduates. |
