School Landscape Project
| Name | Shawn Jadrnicek | | Situation | Hendersonville Elementary School in Walterboro is the latest addition to the Colleton County School District. The school featured a barren landscape constituting a massive lawn without a single shrub or tree. Teachers complained about the lack of shade for children during recess. The school children also showed little pride for the appearance of the school. | | Response | Through the assistance of the PTO (Parent Teachers Organization) and a local nursery, the county agent coordinated a plan to establish a
landscape for the school. The agent approached the PTO to garner $500.00 for the landscape project. Wildwood Nursery then agreed to sell and deliver $17,500.00 in plant material at the reduced price of $500.00. The county agent assimilated a volunteer force consisting of three Colleton County Master Gardeners, four PTO members, and three community members to design and implement the landscape project. | | Impact | Thirty-five large trees were planted at Hendersonville Elementary School creating an arboretum in the formerly desolate landscape. As a result of the project, teachers, as well as the county agent, have used the trees to educate children on tree care, identification, and importance. In addition, "arboretum" became the word of the month for Hendersonville Elementary School. The contributors also benefited from the arrangement. Wildwood Nursery received publicity and recognition for their generosity and Master Gardeners received volunteer hours and training. |
