AmeriCorps Members Tutor At-risk Middle School Students

Name

Alta Mae Marvin

Situation

Builders of Tomorrow, Inspiring Leaders one Student at a Time addresses the dropout rates in South Carolina and specifically rural counties along the I-95 Corridor. There are 3301 students in grades 6, 7 and 8 in the 5 school districts we are working. Of these students, 1485 will dropout before 11th grade and most will dropout before high school. Additionally, 47% of 10th grade students do not pass all parts of the state exam on the first attempt.

Response

We applied for and received an AmeriCorps Grant to expand our Youth Leadership/Dropout Prevention program to four additional counties/school districts; Allendale County Schools, Barnwell School District #19 (Blackville), Colleton County School District, Dorchester County School District #4 (St George), and Hampton County School District One (Hampton). Tutoring at risk middle school students is part of the strategies in our Builders of Tomorrow AmeriCorps Grant; we expect to see academic improvement as a result of the tutoring.

Impact

At mid-year evaluation, reports indicate that 68% of the students grades improved in math and 86% of the students grades improved in English. By the end of July 31, 2007 AmeriCorps members will have conducted 7200 hours of tutoring to at risk middle school students.
