Student Achievement Workshop
| Name | Latosia S. Gibson | | Situation | In Colleton County, the youth that are high school aged were encountering difficulty in achieving basic school readiness. The youth were leaving the middle school atmosphere without the knowledge of how to cope with the high school standards. Many youth drop out of school or develop behavioral problems that are not conductive to learning. In a rural county, many youth do not have access to programs that will help foster positive behavior, increase stronger personal development and motivate them to become productive citizens.
| | Response | The County agent collaborated with the high school ninth grade teachers, other extension agents, volunteers and the youth services in the county to assist in offering programs to help increase the youth’s self-esteem, build better character and promote positive behavior. The youth aged 13-18 were targeted to implement the student Achievement Workshops. The county agent taught the seven habits of Highly Effective Teens lessons to 75 youth in 1 to 6 hour sessions. The youth were given the Seven Habits book, workbook and an agenda book. The lessons were taught during three Saturdays. The materials were provided by the county agent. | | Impact | After participating in the Extension program, 90% of the participants indicated that they had increased their knowledge of how to incorporate the seven habits in their personal lives, study habits and school environment. Eighty percent indicated they increased their knowledge about their personal achievement and how to improve upon or maintain it. Eighty percent of the volunteers indicated they have a better understanding of how the seven habits can help them improve their lives.
