Situation

Many afterschool and other programs are sponsored in the city limits of the county. However, in the rural part of Charleston County that borders Colleton County, the opportunity for positive youth development activities are few. Transportation, financial burdens, and low education level are a few of the problems many youth and their families face in seeking youth development programs. In addition, youth face risks such as exposure to gang related activities and drugs.

Response

The county agent collaborated with a local African American church to provide youth development programs. The local church donated the space and snacks for each meeting. The agent taught a series of ten two-hour sessions reaching about 75 youth ages 5-17. Other county agents from the neighboring county also partnered in this project. Several 4-H program areas were taught: Food and Nutrition, Seven Habits for Highly Effective Teens and Children, Building Family Strengths, personal development and leadership. A 4-H community club would be established after the series of sessions.

Impact

After participating in an Extension program, 95% of the participants indicated that they had increased their knowledge about proper nutrition, skills increasing good behavior in school, ideas on how to communicate better, and increased self-esteem. Ninety percent indicated that they increased their knowledge about personal development. Eighty-five percent intend to use the skills and information learned to improve their community and help other youth who did not have the opportunity to participate the program.
