Afterschool Program Organizes Four 4-H Clubs
| Name | Deon S. Legette | | Situation | Approximately 95 youth are currently enrolled in the Afterschool Program at Midway School in Cassatt, SC. These youth are selected to participate in this program because they need assistance with schoolwork and need extra curricular activities to help stimulate their self esteem. The school officials requested that Extension/4-H help with this mission. The youth were actively involved in nutrition education programs (through EFNEP) under Ms. Flora Washington's instruction for approximately 6 weeks.
After completing the nutrition education session, they were transitioned into the 4-H program where the group was divided into four 4-H community clubs. Some of the projects that are planned are gardening, sewing, plants/animals, and personal growth and development. | | Response | As a result of the request from the school for Extension's help with the afterschool program, 7 volunteers were recruited to work with the clubs. The County Extension Agent conducted a volunteer leader training and assisted in program planning for each club. A 4-H "Kick Off" was held on Jan 21, where the youth and adults learned the history of 4-H, the pledge, motto, and other 4-H opportuntities. The volunteers have planned several projects to be completed in the near future. Some of them include
a beautification project for the school grounds, where all clubs will have input and participation. This will serve as each club's community service event. The individual clubs also have other plans related to their individual projects. | | Impact | After an article about the 4-H community clubs was printed in the "Bobcat" (school newsletter), many volunteers have offered to help club leaders with the planned 4-H projects. Many parents also have offered to donate in-kind items for individual projects. Aa a result of the 4-H "Kick Off" and volunteer leader training, 95% of 4-H audience (adult and youth) indicated they increased their knowledge of what 4-H has to offer and how they can increase their self esteem by participating in and completing projects. |
