Horticulture Awareness Day Offers Green Industry New Business Ideas
| Name | Mark Arena | | Situation | Each year businesses are seeking cutting edge material to separate them from the competition and provide their customers better service. Horticulture Awareness Day was specifically developed to provide businesses along the coastal region of South Carolina an educational program to advance their knowledge base and improve customer service. | | Response | Berkeley County Horticulture Agent, Mark Arena developed an educational program that delivered cutting edge information for the green industry. Using talent from within the Extension Service, the following four topics were covered: turf grass, success with palms in the landscape, landscape plants for beauty and nutrition, and plant health care - a newly emerging
business strategy for the green industry. Also, the program provided pesticide credits and International Society of Arboriculture continuing educational units required to maintain certifications and licenses. | | Impact | Forty-eight green industry workers and business owners from six counties attended the program. Evaluations from participants were extremely favorable and reported that the program was a success.
