Wood Infestation Report Training for Professional Pest Control Operators

Name

Bruce C. Johnson

Situation

One of the largest financial investments a person or family can make is the purchase of a home. One of the requirements in obtaining a mortgage for a home is the CL-100 Wood Infestation Report, also known as the termite letter. Discussions with Barry Kostyk, specialist for Department of Pesticide Regulations, have indicated that a majority of Pest Control Operators do not complete the Wood Infestation Report properly.

Response

The first Wood Infestation Report training was held in the spring of 2004 at the Horry County Extension Office. This spring training was such a success that Barry Kostyk and I decided there should be two trainings held in 2005. On January 13, 2005, a training was held in Horry County. On January 14, 2005 the training was expanded to Charleston County. Clemson Extension specialists and personnel provided expert training in wood infestation pests, and the Department of Pesticide Regulations'specialists and personnel provided actual case studies and line by line overview and instruction on proper technology of the inspections. Both programs were limited to 40 participants each. An exam was given at the end of the training to determine proficiency. Five recertification credits were offered for this training.

Impact

The class in Horry County was booked to capacity. Thirty-three participants completed the exam. After evaluations were tabulated (27 of 33 were returned), it was determined that 100% of the attendees responding indicated that this program provided a good background on Wood Infestation Reporting, provided useful information, met their needs, and they would recommend this program to co-workers. This workshop increased over 96% of the participants' knowledge in the major areas of instruction, including insect identification and biology, damage recognition, wood decay fungi, and proper disclosure on CL-100's. This training was successful in improving the education of a very important service industry to the clientele of South Carolina. The training will be provided again in 2006 in other counties in the State.
