| Name | Bruce Johnson | | Situation | Many Commercial-Noncommercial Applicators must become recertified before December 31, 2008. Recertification requires that applicators have ten Continuing Certification Hours (CCH) by that date. Many of the applicators in Horry have worked or work with landscape businesses or golf courses. It is vital to the environment that applicators know and understand the importance of water quality when using pesticides. | | Response | A turf management training was held on January 24, 2008. Dr. Dara Park and Dr. J. C. Chong of Pee Dee Research and Education Center were the guest speakers for this program. Dr. Park's expertise and training focused on Soil Water Repellency and Soil, Water and Pesticide Management. Dr. Chong focused on Management of Landscape and Turfgrass Insect Pests. This was a three and one-half hour training that offered three recertification credits to the applicators. A registration fee of $25.00 was charged. Due to space, the class was limited to 75 applicants. | | Impact | There were a total of 77 participants at this training. All trainees indicated they had gained knowledge in the importance of water quality and turf insect management. Everyone also indicated they would adopt changes to protect the environment and would recommend this program to others. |
