Community Leadership Development
| Name | Sharon Grice | | Situation | Leadership programs are not available to youth in Marion County. No organization offers youth the opportunity to build strong leaderships skills. The only leadership program we have in Marion County is for adults. | | Response | Palmetto Youth Leadership is an advanced leadership class offered in the spring of each year at Mullins High School. It is designed for high school juniors and seniors who are interested in building stronger personal and community leadership skills through classroom and project-based exercises.
This is an outstanding opportunity for youth to build strong leadership skills, while learning about local government, the community and themselves. Palmetto Youth Leadership is designed to broaden the youth's horizons by introducing them to all aspects of personal and community leadership. | | Impact | In the four years that this program has been offered, 32 youth have graduated. The full impact of this program will not be recognized until the youth become adults. One of the young men in the 2nd class felt so strongly about his town after participating in the class, the following year he ran for City Council and lost by less than 50 votes. All of the students stated that this class has made them reflect on their strengths and weaknesses, and has made them focus on ways they can improve their ability to achieve in adult life. |
