4-H Horse Program
| Name | Sharon Grice | | Situation | Organized recreational activities for youth are very limited in Marion County. | | Response | The Marion County 4-H program has gained a new leader that has revamped the total horse program. This leader focuses on teaching the youth responsibly for themselves and their horses. Thirty-one of the 42 members of 4-H Horse Clubs have never ridden a horse before. The leader is teaching them how to care for horses, behavior of horses and the financial resposibility of owning a horse. One of her main focuses is to teach the youth how to care for recovery horses. This is the first leader in Marion County that has not focused on riding.
Since there are limited activities for these youth, the leaders meets with the youth after school 2-3 times per week and a monthly meeting on the 1st Sunday of each month.
This club has grown from five youth at the first meeting to 42 youth at
the 3rd meeting. This leader is in the process of recruiting another
leader in another section of Marion County to organize a second horse club. | | Impact | The group has only been in operation for 3 months. This is the first club
of its kind that have youth from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. We
have not lost any members, but continue to gain members each month. The club is made up of youth who can not afford to own their own horses.
Eight of the youth in this group will probably never own a horse, but they are excited about learning about horses and look forward to when they will begin learning how to ride a horse. |
