Chainsaw Safety

About

Chainsaws are powerful and efficient tools, but they are also among the most hazardous pieces of equipment used by landowners, homeowners, and outdoor workers. Each year, more than 20,000 preventable injuries occur nationwide due to improper techniques, lack of personal protective equipment, or insufficient understanding of saw operation and maintenance. Whether clearing storm damage, maintaining trails, cutting firewood, or performing routine property work, safe chainsaw use is essential to protect people, property, and the surrounding environment.

Clemson Cooperative Extension’s Chainsaw Safety Training Program is designed to help individuals develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to work safely and effectively. Through hands-on instruction and practical demonstrations, our training prepares landowners, homeowners, trail volunteers, municipal employees, and other outdoor professionals to assess hazards, select and use proper safety equipment, and operate chainsaws responsibly. By combining research-based guidance with real-world experience, Clemson Extension helps participants reduce risk, improve efficiency, and build a strong foundation for safe work in the woods and beyond.
