Cattle Producers Utilize Alternative Marketing
| Name | Brian L. Beer | | Situation | Cattle producers in the Lancaster/Chester/York area are always seeking methods to enhance profitability of their cattle operations. One method is to market cattle in uniform truckload lots of properly vaccinated, preconditioned cattle. Marketing calves using this method yields 5 to 7 cents per head more than traditional marketing venues. | | Response | The area livestock agent coordinated an area feeder calf sale of preconditioned truckload lots. Area cattle producers consigned cattle which were screened and uniform loads of similar breed, frame size and muscling were complied. | | Impact | Twenty-one area producers participated in this group marketing effort selling 1018 head of calves. Utilizing this marketing alternative, producers received $34,000 in additional income. The calves sold in this sale received proper vaccinations and will be more profitable for the cattle feeders because of the improved herd health, which will lead to satisfied customers and repeat buyers. |
