Tenacious Partnering to Reach the Masses
| Name | Angela P. Forbes | | Situation | Television media coverage in Lancaster, Chester and York Counties is primarily out of Charlotte, N.C. and Columbia, S.C. Due to the large populations of Charlotte and Columbia, it is very competitive to get coverage on local Extension programs and even more difficult to have an on-going show. Television media is one of the best methods to reach the mass population. Chester County has no local television. However, York and Lancaster have Comporium Communications, which is the cable-provider in the two counties. As a result of being a cable company, a government
access channel/local news channel exists for both Lancaster and York Counties and is viewable to people who purchase cable t.v. The government access channel/news channel is different for each county. In Lancaster County, Lancaster School District and Comporium have an agreement whereby the school provides shows for the government access channel. The School
District offers a broadcast and journalism class for the students and subsequently the Learn TV program. There are a number of shows from which students can choose each semester, one of which is In the Kitchen. | | Response | The Lancaster County Extension Service, via the food safety and nutrition agent, has had a partnership with the School District since spring 2001. Each semester a couple of In the Kitchen shows have been taped. This is a thirty-minute show that encompasses cooking, nutrition, food safety and kitchen safety. It has been an excellent mechanism to market Clemson
and to teach the public. It is also a wonderful opportunity to teach the kids who work with the shows. The partnership has been excellent and the
county agent has wanted to tape more shows and has communicated this to the teacher, David Knight, who is also the Public Relations Director for the school district. David and his staff have been strong supporters of Clemson Extension and of In the Kitchen from the beginning of our work together in 2001. They have been accommodating to the county agent by always providing good students and by working together to schedule the shows. | | Impact | After working together for over five years and doing about 3-4 shows per semester, beginning in the 2006-2007 school year, we are doing more shows and finding ways to fit those in with all of the other Learn TV shows and subsequent scheduling of those. In the fall of 2006, the county agent worked with 5 different students and taped five shows. Thus far in the spring of 2007, the county agent has worked with four different students and taped fours shows. Currently, plans are to tape FOUR more shows! This will be EIGHT shows thirty minutes per show in this semester. Shows reach thousands of folks in the City of Lancaster, Indian Land, and Fort Lawn of Chester County. Additionally, the county agent is working with more students who are learning about Clemson Extension, nutrition, cooking, and food safety. |
