TRUMAN NICHOLSON is a Research Associate and CNC Shop Manager in the Machining and Technical Services' Machine Shop. He regularly consults with faculty, students, and staff to help them achieve their research goals.

PROJECTS

LIGNIN PROJECT: Machined components for the Lignin project, which examined how a waste byproduct from the paper manufacturing industry could be converted into a useable source of energy - Dr. Mark Thies, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

KNEE RESEARCH MOLD: Designed and machined a mold to be used by students and faculty for knee implant research - Dr. Martine LaBerge, Bioengineering

FATIGUE TESTING COMPONENTS: Machined a test fixture and bearing components for fatigue testing of carbon fiber hip stems - Dr. John Kennedy, Mechanical Engineering

POLYMER FILM COMPONENTS: Aided in the design of a smart blending extruding die and machined the components to produce a polymer film that contained vitamins and other additives to extend the shelf life of food goods such as MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) - Dr. Dave Zumbrunnen, Mechanical Engineering

ACRYLIC HEART VALVE TEST: Machined, polished and assembled an acrylic heart valve test chamber - Dr. Richard Figliola, Mechanical Engineering

  • Tool and Die Making
  • Experience with precision manual and CNC grinding equipment, holding tolerances to .0002”
  • Skilled in the programming and operation of CNC lathe, CNC mill, manual lathe, manual mill, jig bore, Blanchard grinder, welding, fabrication, heat treating furnaces, and EDM
  • Performs Quality Systems audits to confirm procedural compliance
  • Consults with engineers in design changes and machining practices
  • Design part models using AutoCAD and SolidWorks
