Mr. Raymond Sligh served Clemson Cooperative Extension for over 30 years, from 1978 to 2010. He served in Saluda, Union, and York Counties, and later as Interim Piedmont Regional Director, with post-retirement service in Chester and Lancaster Counties. He was deeply committed to both agriculture and youth development, serving as a 4-H agent and Extension leader. He established innovative programs such as 4-H livestock loan-a-calf program and coached multiple state-winning livestock, dairy, and poultry judging teams. Recognized for his service and leadership, Raymond received Distinguished Service Awards from both the South Carolina and National Associations of County Agricultural Agents, as well as the SC Cattlemen's Association Educator of the Year award
Mr. William R. “Rusty” Thomson served Clemson Cooperative Extension from 1977 to 2003, working in Union and York Counties before becoming an Area Livestock Agent serving multiple counties. A leader in agricultural innovation, he developed the Clemson University Management Assistance Program (CUMAP) and co-founded the S.C. Pride and Carolina Quest programs. He also played a key role in advancing retained ownership programs and educating farmers on herd health, genetics, and forage management. Rusty provided strong leadership within Extension and professional organizations and was widely recognized for his impact, receiving honors such as the SC Cattlemen’s Association Educator of the Year and national environmental stewardship awards.
Dr. John Irwin served Clemson Cooperative Extension from 1979 to 2009 as an Extension Animal Scientist, working extensively with livestock producers across South Carolina. He played a key role in developing and implementing programs such as the SC Pride, SC Quest, and SC Beef Certification Program, helping producers improve herd health, nutrition, breeding, and marking practices. Dr. Irwin was deeply committed to youth development, supporting numerous 4-H and FFA livestock programs and mentoring young people across the state. He provided leadership through statewide demonstrations, workshops, and agricultural education tours, while working closely with cattlemen’s association and industry partners. Recognized for his service, Dr. Irwin received multiple awards, including the NACAA Distinguished Service Award and the SC Cattlemen’s Association Educator of the Year award.
