Coyotes can be carriers of rabies, a disease that affects humans and other animals. Rabies is lethal once the symptoms start to show up. If a person or a pet is suspected to have been in contact with a coyote, they should be taken to get medical attention immediately. Rabies can be treated before the symptoms set in. Rabid animals exhibit unusual behavior. If a coyote is active in broad daylight and shows no fear of humans, avoid the coyote as it may be rabid.
Mange can be carried by coyotes and it can spread to pets. Animals with mange will be itching frequently, they will often have hair loss, and they may have lesions. Mange can be treated but it should still be avoided at all costs.
Coyotes are carriers of heartworms, a worm that infects canines. Domestic dogs are susceptible to heartworms. Even when treated properly, heartworm can cause permanent damage to the animal it has infected.
