Coyotes have established a presence in South Carolina only recently. The first records of their presence occurred in 1978. Since then, they have spread throughout the state and can now be found in every county. While the extent of the damage they can cause is often misunderstood, there are still some sources of conflict to be mindful of. Coyotes can pose a threat to livestock and may even feed on crops, such as watermelon. Managing coyotes can pose a significant challenge, since they rapidly replace any individual coyote removed from a population.
