About

Carlina DiRusso (PhD, Penn State University) is an assistant professor of communication at Clemson University. She studies how to design and share health information in ways that positively influence our attitudes and behaviors. Her research incorporates perspectives from persuasion, emotion psychology and defensive information processing to understand why some messages are effective and why others fail. In health contexts, Dr. DiRusso has explored topics about chronic pain, maternal health, vaccination, and healthcare policy. To inform her research questions and implications, she draws on her background in the public relations industry where she worked with clients like the Cleveland Clinic, Philips, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca and Pfizer.

How their research is transforming health care

Dr. DiRusso’s research aims to improve the way we communicate with various audiences about personal health and healthcare. While the United States has strong health innovation, it lags other countries in important areas like health outcomes and affordability. Communication is a key ingredient in the solutions for improving our healthcare system and health outcomes for patients. By studying how to strategicallydesign and share health information for various audiences, Dr. DiRusso’s work strives to contribute to improving health, wellbeing and the healthcare experience for all.
