Preparing to Transfer to Clemson University
Application Materials and Tips
Applying to Clemson as a Transfer Student
Applying to Clemson as an undergraduate transfer student is a unique process because transfer admission and enrollment is conducted on a rolling basis. This means you can apply for Spring, Summer or Fall admission as a transfer student.
Review our application guide to confirm that you meet the qualifications for an undergraduate transfer applicant, to make note of important application deadlines, and to see our comprehensive guidance on navigating your application process successfully.
Options After Receiving Your Admission Decision
When applying to Clemson, you are required to list a first and second choice of academic program (major). Due to enrollment limitations and other requirements, some students are admitted to their second choice.
If you are interested in changing your academic program, you may request a change in your Clemson admissions portal.
Please note that if you were not admitted to your first choice major, you will not be able to request that major in your portal. Open enrollment majors will be listed.
If you wish to change your academic program after enrolling at Clemson, please contact a departmental representative for the academic program in which you are interested to obtain the current change-of-academic-program requirements.
How to Transfer Your Credits to Clemson
The Office of Admissions evaluates and starts the process of credit evaluation from other institutions. Final approval for use of your transferable credits in a particular degree program is determined by your academic advisor or academic department.
How Clemson awards credit for coursework completed at other institutions
Depending on course content, credit for a specific Clemson course can be awarded from 1000 to 4000 level. Elective credit is the only credit that can be awarded for courses for which there is no Clemson equivalent, but elective credits can also be evaluated to satisfy requirements.
Transfer Matriculation Summary Notes
After you submit the courses you completed at another instruction, Clemson determines their transferability. They will be represented on your Transfer Matriculation Summary using the following process.
- NCT is used for courses that are not college transferrable.
- Exact Clemson course equivalents are noted as such.
- ELEC 0001 is considered elective credit.
- Subject-area credit (1999-4999) satisfy X type of academic requirements for your Clemson degree.
See more information about the course substitution process.
If you have specific questions about these course categories, please contact Mickayla Crumley at michayc@clemson.edu.
How transfer credits Clemson has awarded satisfy Clemson degree requirements
Credits awarded as Clemson course equivalents and elective credit can be used to satisfy major-specific, general education or elective requirements that you have not yet completed.
See which credits have direct course equivalents by reviewing the Transfer Course Equivalency List.
Changing how credit for courses completed elsewhere is awarded
If you completed a course elsewhere and would like that to be reevaluated so the credit is awarded differently than it was originally, you can proceed with a review by your departmental faculty credit evaluator. If they approve, you will be able to chang the way your transfer credit for that course is awarded.
See details on changing how course credit completed elsewhere is awarded.
Key Contact and Support Materials
If you have a question about how your course was evaluated, you may contact the department responsible for teaching that course after enrolling at Clemson.
A course description or syllabus will be required for further review from the department. Speak with your major academic advisor for more information about course evaluations.
Transferring math credits from another institution and the Clemson Math Placement Test (CMPT)
For new transfer students with AP/IB or transfer credit, please visit the CMPT website for a list of introductory mathematics and statistics courses and their prerequisites.
If it is necessary for you to take the CMPT, know the CMPT may be taken up to four times and must be taken on a computer with a webcam for online proctoring software.
