Lactation Room Guidelines

Per federal law, Clemson University is required to provide a clean, private, non-bathroom space for nursing mothers to express breastmilk during work. A private office space may serve as a lactation room. Private offices will not be listed on the Lactation Network page, and their maintenance is the responsibility of employees/student workers.

Clemson recommends that rooms used for lactation maintain these minimum accommodations:

  • Lockable room
  • Basic “in use” signage
  • Access to a nearby clean water source and a sink
  • Chair and table
  • Comfortable room temperature
  • Trash can
  • Paper towels
  • Adequate lighting
  • Electrical outlet

To report a custodial/maintenance issue in a lactation room, contact University Facilities.
