Student Mentoring: Your Guide to Success

Navigating your first year in engineering or computer science can feel like learning a new language while finding your way through a maze. That's why we've created a mentoring program that pairs you with someone who's already mastered the journey you're just beginning.

As an incoming student in the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS), you'll be matched with an upperclassman who's not only in your major but can give support and advice about adjusting to life as a Clemson student. Not only can mentors help you prepare for a test, but they can also become a lifelong connection.

What Your Mentor Provides:

Gain insider knowledge and personalized strategies from mentors who've already succeeded in your courses while receiving support for academic challenges, time management, and stress relief—all to help you navigate both your studies and college life with confidence.

  • Academic Guidance: Gain insights about professors' teaching styles, effective study locations during peak academic periods, and underutilized campus resources typically discovered later in undergraduate studies.
  • Course-Specific Support: Receive guidance on difficult concepts and help students navigate common academic challenges.
  • Time Management Resources: Develop practical strategies for managing coursework while participating in campus activities and maintaining personal well-being.
  • Ongoing Support Network: Connect with experienced advisors during stressful academic periods such as examinations and major projects.

Beyond One-on-One Support:

The PEER & WISE mentoring community hosts regular social events, study sessions, and professional development activities throughout both semesters. These gatherings are perfect opportunities to:

  • Connect with students across different engineering and computer science disciplines.
  • Build your professional network before you even need to start job hunting.
  • Decompress with peers who understand the unique challenges of STEM majors.
  • Celebrate successes and milestones together.

Many of our mentees tell us that what started as an academic support relationship evolved into one of their most valuable friendships at Clemson. Whether you're looking for academic guidance, social connections, or just someone who can show you the ropes, your PEER & WISE mentor is ready to help you thrive from day one.

Interested in Signing Up?

Mentors

The mentorship position is offered through Clemson's UPIC on-campus internship program, providing students with valuable professional experience while supporting their peers.

Mentors earn competitive hourly compensation for 10 hours of weekly service and receive official internship credit that enhances their academic portfolio. This structured opportunity develops leadership, communication, and coaching skills highly valued by future employers.

Interested students should send an email to the appropriate program supervisor—Lisa Jackson for PEER or Stephanie Henry for WISE.

Mentees

The mentorship program is designed to provide supportive guidance while respecting students' busy schedules.

Mentees commit to a weekly check-in with their assigned mentor, which can be conducted through text, email, or in-person meetings based on individual preference and availability. Beyond this essential connection, participation in additional activities is flexible and optional. Mentors dedicate 10 hours weekly to supporting their mentees, creating one to two hours of enrichment opportunities each week.

Mentees receive weekly invitations to participate in personalized check-ins and group activities specifically designed to enhance their academic success and professional development.

If you are interested in mentoring, email cupeerwise@clemson.edu.
