Services
OTEI offers consultation services to instructors on a variety of teaching-related topics, and we provide consultation or workshops upon request to academic units. Please see the list below for further information before filling out our request form.

-
Class Observations
When instructors want the feedback of an outside expert, an OTEI consultant will observe and take notes on an instructor's lecture style, discussion skills, questioning techniques, class rapport, use of technology, and other performance dimensions. A pre-and post-meeting helps the instructor gain the most from this experience.
Due to time limitations, OTEI staff focus on observing those who need instructional insight or feedback on new practices. Through the OTEI Peer Observation of Teaching (PoT) Clemson initiative, there are trained faculty who are willing to provide letters of support for TPR purposes. Please visit the Peer Observers page for more information.
-
Student Feedback Session
This in-class survey and short conversation between students and an OTEI staff member takes approximately 20 minutes. After summarizing results, we will meet with you to share the class's feedback on aspects that are helping their learning, common barriers, and suggested improvements. The purpose of this activity is to find realistic, actionable steps.
-
Analysis of Course Materials
Is there something about your course you are struggling with, uncertain of its efficacy, or that causes student confusion? Are you trying out a new pedagogy and want feedback on course elements? Have you been assigned a new class or has the class size changed significantly?
Through analysis and discussion, we can offer suggestions on your syllabus, assignments, activities, course organization, appropriate teaching and assessment methods, and overall course design. We may use metrics such as student feedback to help identify where gaps are evident.
This service is available to all instructors of record; we also offer a summer course design institute, which gives you more resources and understanding of course construction. (Posted in our newsletter and our events page.) For annual review, visit our Teaching Effectiveness Canvas Course, which guides you through resources for peer and self review of materials!
-
AI and Teaching
AI technologies are changing teaching and learning. If AI is affecting your assessments, activities, or course design, OTEI can help you explore options that support your learning goals. Our approach is AI-neutral: we neither promote nor discourage AI use, but draw on current educational research to help you identify approaches appropriate for your discipline, course, and learning context.
-
Departmental Support
Department leaders (chairs, committee heads and others in the department or college) may request information, advisement, training, or facilitation on a wide range of teaching-related issues. For developing curriculum, OTEI can facilitate writing program outcomes, curriculum mapping, and curriculum revision.
Departments and colleges: you may invite us to your next meeting to deliver a short workshop with hands-on activity; we can facilitate discussion and provide information on a current teaching topic; or we can provide a short overview of our support for faculty. -
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
When we can, OTEI supports Teaching as Research, also referred to as SoTL: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Instructors may approach course enhancements as a researcher, with the goal of sharing research results. When a grant or contract pertains to teaching or requires a teaching component, faculty and administrators may request consultations on curriculum, existing literature, certain research methodologies, and strategies for assessing the treatment/program. We provide support as time allows.
General Consultation, Observation, and Feedback
In our consultation services, we help faculty with resources and feedback, whether we observe a class session, gather student feedback, or assist with review of course materials (such as activities or assessments). We help instructors think about how teaching supports student learning. We help instructors revise courses and develop new ones. OTEI will also link instructors with appropriate support units on campus, such as CCIT, the Office of Digital Technology and Learning, Library Support, and other units. Academic departments can engage in consultation to help with curriculum development and faculty support. All individual consultations are as private as possible.
