Summer Scholars

Tiger Strings Camp

Do you love music…..every genre of music?  The inaugural camp for strings is THIS summer and it is going to be the place for YOU!!  Imagine having instruction in classical chamber music AND other genres like rock, jazz, and pop styles.  You will learn new bow techniques and understand how styles relate to one another and improve your musicianship.  

You will receive direct instruction from Dr. Kim Souther in alternative styles, improvisation, and stage presence. You will have the opportunity to create, collaborate, and perform in both large and small ensembles. 

STUDENTS WILL... 

  • Collaborate and create with peers in small and large string ensembles.  
  • Learn new alternative styles in bowing, music reading, and interpretation.   
  • Develop an improved understanding and application of improvisation.  
  • Understand how better knowledge of the instrument’s capabilities enhance our productivity as a performer of any genre.  
  • Improve stage presence skills.  
  • Gain an appreciation for and better understanding of multiple genres and transfer this knowledge to future musical endeavors.  

SAMPLE OF GROUP SESSIONS... 

  • BOWING: Shadow bowing, chopping, dirty bowing, ponticello, ricochet, and flautando.  
  • ROCK RIFFS and ROCK STYLES  
  • JAZZ: Understanding chord changes, improv., and non-vibrato playing  
  • READING THE ROOM: How to better connect with the musicians on stage and audience in the hall through improved stage presence.  
  • OLD TIME & BLUEGRASS – Learn new tunes and the art of handing off solos.  
  • SMALL GROUP ENSEMBLE – Apply what you have learned by creating and collaborating with a chamber group of musicians.  

Course Supplies: Instrument in good working order, pencil, rosin, shoulder rest, extra strings, rock stop (cellists/bassists)

Course Prerequisites: Knowledge in string instrument playing techniques and music reading capability
