Clemson Textiles' skills move an innovative textile technology from the laboratory to real-world deployment. As a satellite research facility within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Clemson University, Clemson Textiles is dedicated to advancing fibers, fabrics, and textile-based materials. With decades of expertise in chemical- and biological-protection fabrics and e-textiles, the team has built a strong network of commercial manufacturing partners to help transition emerging technologies from research to production. This expertise spans the entire development pipeline, from core material chemistries and performance-driven fabric design to in-house fabrication and non-agent performance testing.

Nearly every research project is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, where Clemson Textiles collaborates with government and industry partners to develop specialty fibers, functional fabrics, and advanced garment systems. While the work begins in the laboratory, every project is developed with large-scale manufacturing in mind, ensuring innovations are ready for real-world application. Housed in a dedicated off-campus facility with the necessary security clearance to support sensitive research, Clemson Textiles is uniquely positioned to develop solutions that meet today's most complex challenges.

Among our recent innovations are next-generation e-textiles that seamlessly integrate sensors into fabrics while maintaining the comfort, flexibility, and durability expected of traditional textiles.

These smart materials enable real-time data collection for a variety of applications. The program is also developing conductive yarns and overbraided textile structures that function as embedded wiring systems within garments, opening new possibilities for wearable technologies. These innovations support applications ranging from health monitoring systems to protective equipment for military working dogs, with many projects supported through collaborations with the U.S. Department of Defense.

Clemson Textiles' research is extending well beyond terrestrial applications as well. One notable example is NASA's Veno-Constrictive Thigh Cuff, a Clemson-developed textile technology designed to help mitigate the fluid shifts astronauts experience in space. The project exemplifies how advanced textile research at Clemson is addressing complex challenges across aerospace, defense, healthcare, and other high-impact industries.

Innovation across U.S. textile supply chain

Clemson University recently invested in a Picanol Ultimax rapier weaving machine to enable hands-on education, prototyping, and applied research in advanced materials and textile engineering. One of the first showcase projects with the Ultimax was the production of the ceremonial ribbon fabric for the official opening of the university’s new Advanced Materials Innovation Complex (AMIC).

The fabric itself represented a real technical challenge as the Ultimax weaving machine successfully processed a complex mix of yarns. This underscores that Clemson Textiles, part of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), now has the right equipment to combine not only high-speed, premium textile production but also technical, highly complex weaving applications.
