College and Departmental Bylaws

This is a repository of governing documents related to faculty shared governance.

To facilitate participation of the faculty in shared governance, the faculty is formally organized in accordance with the Constitution of the Faculty of Clemson University, as approved by the Clemson University Board of Trustees.

The Clemson University Faculty Manual is a compilation of information pertaining to faculty participation in the governance of the University. It includes those University academic policies and procedures that are of major concern to faculty.

In conformity with policy adopted by the Board of Trustees in January 1981, the Faculty of each college and department, or equivalent unit, is organized in accordance with bylaws developed by its Faculty under guidelines for the governance of academic units. Policies related to the Board of Trustee’s administration of the University can be found on the BOT website. All unit bylaws must conform to the policies indicated in the Faculty Manual and may not conflict with the Constitution of the Faculty of Clemson University or University policies.

Faculty preparing amendments to College, Department or School bylaws may conduct a self-review using the checklist. Prior to the final faculty vote on any such amendments, bylaw drafts should be sent to the Faculty Manual Consultant Committee for compliance review. All bylaws are subject to review for compliance by the Provost or designee.

Please see this submission process sheet, to guide units as they update their bylaws. Additionally, the Faculty Senate issued a guidance memorandum to assist faculty and academic units to implement changes to their bylaws to ensure compliance with the Faculty Manual.
