Protecting South Carolina’s Food Sources and Bolstering Agricultural Services
$2.6 million
Livestock Poultry Health (LPH) is a critical component of Clemson’s land-grant mission.
Goals:
- Increased funding will allow for an additional pesticide program manager position to
help ensure the safety of our food supply via South Carolina meat processing plants
and to enhance detection and prevention of the spread of disease in both animals
and plants to keep our agricultural industry strong. - By implementing and maintaining appropriate training protocols, this position will
support the integrity of South Carolina’s agricultural systems — both livestock
and crop-based — and safeguard public health from consequences of unqualified
pesticide application. - Additional funding to address inflationary costs associated with agricultural
services will ensure Clemson is positioned to effectively follow through
on its stated and expected mission.
Current State
- Annual operating expenses have risen across all Livestock Poultry Health units due to
inflationary pressures and evolving operating demands. - LPH identified key areas contributing to the need for increased funding:
- Animal health programs
- Clemson Veterinary Diagnostic Center
- South Carolina Meat-Poultry Inspection Department
What will this $2.6M do?
- Pesticide training program manager and operating — $100K
- Inflation to the operating funds of the Agricultural Service Laboratory — $500K
- Annual operating expense increases across LPH units — $2M
