Summer Scholars

Advanced Audio Engineering & Music Production (Rising 9th-12th)

Course Description

The original Audio Production Bootcamp was designed as a one-week introduction to the world of music and sound production, targeted at students who are completely new to or with only a basic knowledge of the audio production process.

If you already have some experience recording or producing music, then the Advanced Audio class may be a better option.  In this class, you will spend more time in the studio with opportunity for hands-on exposure to professional grade equipment and audio workstations.  Rather than focusing mostly on the creative songwriting or music composition process, the goal is to provide experience with the actual recording, mixing, editing and overall production process.  Some of the objective include:

  • Develop a basic understanding of different types of microphones, their application and placement for a variety of instruments.
  • Employ professional grade equipment such mic preamps, compressors, limiters and EQs in an actual recording environment.
  • Develop hands-on skills in setting up microphones, mic stands, signal routing, hear back systems, gain structure, setting recording levels and troubleshooting.
  • Learn fundamental post-production skills such as digital editing, leveling, audio clean up, noise reduction and automation.
  • Apply essential mixing, digital signal processing and automation techniques to your recording with the goal of creating a polished final mix.

Requirements

  • Previous experience with digital audio workstation software (Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, etc).
  • Experience creating music as songwriter, musician, arranger or producer.
  • An idea for a song or instrumental piece of music you would like to produce or record.
  • Encouraged but not required:
