Checking PDF Accessibility

Quick Checks

This guide provides an overview of how to verify a PDF's accessibility using automated tools and manual checks. An understanding of PDF Fundamentals is a prerequisite for this guide. Resolving accessibility issues is addressed in the following guide on PDF Remediation.

Two checks can quickly determine if a PDF is inaccessible.

Does the document have live text?

To check if a document has live text, select a portion of text with your cursor. Alternatively, attempt to search for text using Command + F (Mac) or Control + F (Windows). If you cannot highlight or search for text, the PDF is not accessible. This situation can occur when documents have been scanned.

Is the PDF tagged?

To check if a PDF is tagged, select Accessibility Tags in the side panel to reveal the tag tree. If the tag tree indicates "No Tags available," the document is not accessible.

If either of these checks fail, skip to next steps.
