Research Interests
Children’s Literature, Neo-Victorian Adaptations, Harry Potter, and Fairy Tales

Prof. Megan MacAlystre teaches Children's Literature, World Literature, and British Literature in Clemson University's English department. She is also a faculty member of STS and Affiliated faculty in Women’s Leadership and Global Black Studies.

She researches the ways stories, mostly Victorian works and fairy tales, change as they’re retold across cultures. This particularly includes Disney media and noncommercial works, like fanart and fanfic. Her doctoral research focused on Harry Potter’s Victorian precursors and how fans addressed lingering 19th-century tropes and issues in their own creations. Now she predominantly addresses the intersections of these stories with LQBTQIA+ identities.

When not in a Clemson classroom, Prof. MacAlystre teaches for the summer PEOPLE Program at UW Madison and provides community lectures on 19th-century British and American clothing, medicine, and social customs.

She fills the rest of her time working on her farm, fostering dogs, and raising endangered geese.
