Professor Marks’ research focuses on the intersection of culture and economics. His most recent monograph, The Information Nexus (2016), offers a new interpretation of the history of global capitalism from the Middle Ages to the present. His second book, How Russia Shaped the Modern World (2003), explored the international reception of Russian culture and ideas; his first book, Road to Power (1991), was a study of the Trans-Siberian railroad. He is currently co-editing a volume on the Russian Civil War and writing a history of Spanish wine. He has received awards for both teaching and research, including the 2018 CAAH Faculty Member of the Year Award (by student vote), and The Richard Stites Senior Scholar Award given by the Southern Conference on Slavic Studies (2017).
