Alcohol and Other Drugs Counseling (ACTT)

The Assessment, Choices, Treatment and Transitions (ACTT) program at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides assessment, prevention, intervention and treatment services to reduce the risk associated with substance use and abuse within the Clemson University family. We strive to develop student awareness, knowledge and skills to increase personal and social responsibility in order to remove obstacles for student success. The ACTT program emphasizes a student’s responsibility for their self-care and encourages them to engage throughout the assessment and treatment process.

If you are experiencing an alcohol or other drug related emergency, dial 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

When contacting emergency services, such as 911, please notify them if you have been in contact with somebody who has a confirmed case of COVID-19, has symptoms of COVID-19, are awaiting results from a COVID-19 test, or if you have a confirmed case of COVID-19.

  • Self-Refer to Services

A self-referred student is a student seeking services of their own accord or at the recommendation of a concerned parent/friend regarding their substance use and is not a mandated client or involved with any legal referral source (i.e. Pre-Trial Intervention, Office of Community and Ethical Standards, etc.). Self-referred students come the ACTT program because they desire to obtain assistance in addressing their substance use.

Self-referred students who have paid their Student Health Fee can receive services through the ACTT program at no additional cost.

How to Access the ACTT Program

Students who want to access services can call CAPS at 864-656-2451 to schedule their ACTT individual assessment via a brief phone intake.

What to Expect at My First Appointment

At the time of the assessment, the student will meet with a licensed clinician who will listen to the student’s presenting concerns and obtain information from the student to determine if services are needed. If the clinician feels the student meets criteria for services, recommendations will be made and may include individual counseling and/or group counseling. If the clinician does not feel a recommendation for services is appropriate they can assist the student with other resources on/off campus to help them with their presenting issue.

The ACTT program desires to develop treatment goals with the student and assist them with meeting those goals throughout the counseling process. By honoring the student’s right to choose, follow-through with the recommendations will be up to self-referred student.

  • Mandated Students

A mandated student is defined as a student who is being referred for ACTT services by an agency, organization, legal service or by a part of Clemson University. Examples of referral sources that are commonly involved with ACTT Program mandated students include the following:

    • Clemson faculty/staff

    • Office of Community and Ethical Standards (OCES)

    • Office of Advocacy and Success (OAS)
    • Dean of Students Office

    • CU Housing

    • Clemson University Municipal Court

    • Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI) program

    • Alcohol Education Program (AEP)

    • Local attorneys

    • City of Clemson Police Department

    • City of Clemson Municipal Court

The ACTT Program desires to assist mandated students with referral source requirements while providing assessment, prevention, intervention, and treatment to the student in order to prevent alcohol and other drug-related problems from occurring in the future.

Mandated students are charged a $75 processing fee that is paid online through MyHealth-e. If a student does not pay the fee by semester’s end, the fee will be transferred to the student’s University bill.

How to Access the ACTT Program

In order for a mandated student to access services, the following information from their referral source is requested:

We ask that the referral source fax this information to our office at 864-656-0760 prior to the student’s first appointment and that the student have a copy of the completed ACTT Student Agreement & Referral Form, the completed Authorization for Release of Confidential Information (ACTT specific), and any other information provided to them by their referral source to their first appointment.

Once a mandated student has been referred by their referral source the student will call CAPS at 864-656-2451 to schedule their ACTT individual assessment via a brief phone intake.

If the clinician feels that there are no recommendations based on the assessment, the referral source will be notified of the client’s completion of the ACTT program.

While the ACTT program honors a mandated student’s rights to comply with the treatment recommendations, only mandated students who complete all treatment recommendations will be sent a letter of completion of the ACTT program to their referral source. If a mandated student chooses not to follow the recommendations their referral source will be notified of their non-compliance regarding the treatment recommendations. We respect mandated students’ rights to confidentiality and will only disclose information with the student’s consent obtained from the Authorization for Release of Confidential Information (ACTT specific)

  • Information for Families

The ACTT program emphasizes student responsibility for their treatment. If you are concerned regarding your student’s alcohol and or drug use we prompt you to speak with your student and encourage them to consider coming through the ACTT program as a self-referred client. If your student has been involved with legal related issues due to their alcohol and drug use, your student would be considered a mandated client. If you have specific questions regarding your student's case at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), please know that we cannot confirm or deny that your student is a client at CAPS without a signed Authorization for Release of Confidential Information (ACTT specific) from your student. If you have any general questions regarding the ACTT program or other CAPS services, please contact CAPS at 864-656-2451.
