Coaching vs. Counseling: What’s the Difference?
Both Health and Well-Being Coaching and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) are valuable resources at Clemson, but they serve different purposes.
Health and Well-Being Coaching:
- Focuses on present and future goals
- Helps you build practical skills and healthy habits
- Emphasizes strengths, values and motivation
- Supports goal-setting and behavior change
- Promotes self-determination and personal growth
- Empowers you through a collaborative, nonjudgmental partnership with a certified Health and Wellness Coach
- Ideal if you want support with stress management, time management, lifestyle changes or feeling “stuck”
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS):
- Provides confidential support and treatment for student mental health needs
- Uses therapeutic modalities delivered by licensed mental health professionals
- Addresses concerns such as anxiety, depression, interpersonal challenges and emotional distress
- May include psychiatric medication management and clinical care
- Focuses on cultivating emotional well-being through counseling and therapy
Choosing the Right Support
In some situations, a student’s needs may be better supported by a therapist, dietitian or another trained health care professional. When that’s the case, Well-Being Coaching staff will help connect you to the appropriate resource.
Even if you are working with another provider, you can still meet with a Well-Being Coach to support your progress — such as building habits, staying accountable and setting goals related to your care plan.
If you’re unsure which service is right for you, that’s okay — Well-Being Coaching staff can help guide you to the best fit for your needs.

What to Expect
Wellness coaching sessions typically cost $75-$100 each in the community, but we're providing it for free because we value your well-being. Sessions are offered via Zoom or in-person.
Coaching sessions are led by a certified Health and Wellness Coach, are conversation-based and tailored to your needs. Your coach will listen, ask thoughtful questions and help you reflect, explore options and take action.
Your Initial Session
You will meet one-on-one with a Well-Being Coach for an active working session focused on identifying your priorities and creating a realistic action plan. With guidance from your coach, you set the agenda — the conversation is shaped by what matters most to you.
Ongoing Sessions
Follow-up sessions are typically scheduled about one week apart, but timing can be adjusted based on your needs and schedule. These sessions provide space to check in on progress, refine your goals and continue building skills and strategies that support your well-being.
During Your Sessions, You Can Expect To:
- Talk through your experiences, priorities and challenges
- Clarify your goals and values
- Break goals into realistic, manageable steps
- Check in on progress and adjust your plan as needed
- Stay accountable and supported throughout your journey
You set the direction — your coach is there to guide, support and challenge you along the way.
