Bachelor of Science in Financial Management

The Department of Finance offers a Bachelor of Science in financial management to more than 1,100 students each year. We also offer a minor in finance to approximately 350 students each year.

Finance deals with the planning and management of monetary resources in relation to current or future goals and objectives. Students learn how to measure, forecast and control the financial activities of the organization. The financial management degree provides students with finance and business expertise and contributes to their proficiency in analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.

Employment and Graduate School Opportunities

Our students are highly recruited within the Southeast region. Our national reputation continues to grow, and we are able to assist students seeking employment outside of the Southeast. Bank of America, Ernst and Young, the FDIC, Fluor, Milliken, Northwestern Finance, TD Bank, Truist, Vanguard and Wells Fargo, among many others. We also have many students who go on to graduate programs in business, medicine or law.

Declaring a Financial Management Major

To enter the bachelor's program, students must complete the 30 credit hours outlined in the first-year student pre-business curriculum with a cumulative GPR of 2.0 or better. Students follow the curriculum catalog requirements effective for the year they enter the financial management major.

Other Student Resources

  • Minor in Financial Management

A minor in Financial Management requires FIN 3050, 3070, 3080, 3120, and either FIN 3060 or FIN 3110.

Please note that both FIN 3060 and 3110 have prerequisites of STAT 2300/2301 (or STAT 3090/3091) and ACCT 2010. Additionally, these statistics courses may have their own prerequisites. FIN 3060 or 3110 with a grade of C or better is the prerequisite for all other FIN courses required for the minor.

  • Internships

Summer internships are a great opportunity to gain knowledge of the field and often lead to job offers with that firm. Internship opportunities are posted through the Career Center for Professional Development.

Finance majors and minors can complete summer internships for credit by signing up for one to three credit hours of FIN 3990 in the summer. These internships must be full-time positions that last at least six weeks and involve in-depth finance responsibilities. Students apply to the course coordinator for pre-approval of their internship, complete detailed logs, and write a paper on their experience. For more information, contact John Alexander.

  • Tutoring/Reviews

Free student-led finance review sessions and tutoring are available in the Trading Room Monday through Thursday from 5-6:30 p.m. Tutoring is available for FIN 3060, FIN 3110, and FIN 3120.

  • Creative Inquiry

Creative Inquiry (CI) classes are team-based, instructor-led investigative opportunities that are unique to Clemson University. All Finance CIs are listed as FIN 4980 and range from 1 to 4 credit hours, depending on the length of the commitment and student curriculum needs. Offerings will vary by semester/year, and commitments range from one semester to a full academic year.

Business Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and House Price
This project provides a novel perspective on using artificial intelligence to predict real estate prices using natural language processing tools. Students will be guided in creating a database that can be used to model house values using machine learning tools. It is an exciting opportunity for students to apply their knowledge from finance and engineering backgrounds to study real-world problems.

    CU Financial Markets Lab
The CU Financial Markets Lab is a new initiative in the Department of Finance to improve the marketability of our first and second-year Pre-Business students interested in financial markets for internship and full-time employment interviews. The CU Financial Markets Lab Creative Inquiry project joins students, faculty and industry partners to pilot and develop industry-relevant curriculum, including certifications, projects and case studies, to cultivate opportunities and increase student competitiveness for high-visibility internship opportunities.

    Investment Research Challenge
The CFA Research Challenge, organized by the CFA Institute and its member Societies, involves valuing a publicly traded company. Just as a Wall Street analyst would in a research report, the team of students must set a one-year target price for the stock and issue a buy/hold/sell recommendation. The students must research the company, its industry, competitors, customers and market trends to make assumptions used in a financial model to project future performance. In this project, students develop teamwork, analytical, written and oral communication skills to write their report and present to a panel of investment professionals.

Machine Learning in Finance and Real Estate
This project will bring together students from across disciplines to develop the most sought-after applications of machine learning in finance and real estate investments. Students will collaborate and learn to use big data and machine learning tools to solve business problems. This project will help students across different departments, creating the environment of a startup company. Together we will network, learn, explore and succeed.
