What is Environmental Compliance?
Clemson University is required to comply with Environmental Laws, Regulations, Standards and other requirements such as site permits to operate.
These consist of but are not limited to Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) \, Underground Storage Tank, Stormwater, and Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) regulations. Occupational and Environmental Safety in partnership with University Facilities manages/operates these programs.

Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC)
The Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures plan, SPCC, aims to prevent discharges of petroleum products such as oil, gasoline or diesel from reaching navigable waters of the US. Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) training is required for individuals that work with all forms of petroleum products, including cooking oil and animal fats, in containers 55 gallons and larger. Facilities that store more than 1,320 gallons of oil onsite are subject to EPA Oil Pollution Prevention regulations and must have an SPCC plan.
Initial training required for those who work at a CU facility that is required to take Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) training in SciShield.

Underground Storage Tanks (USTs)
Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) are regulated by EPA and SC DHEC (61-92, Part 280). USTs are regulated for the entire life of the tank system. This includes planning, compliance, permitting, and remediation efforts. Please contact the Hazardous Materials/Environmental Compliance Manager for questions and/or guidance.
